Job Title: Lead Custodian

The Lead Custodian is directly supervised and evaluated by Custodial Supervisor and Facilities Director.

 

Summary:

Maintain quality sanitation of all buildings to ensure safety of students and staff. Directs custodial staff and assigns duties for daily cleaning and special events.

  • Supervisory Responsibilities. Directly supervises  all custodial employees in the assigned building that are a part of the Custodial Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities can include performing or assisting with interviews, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewording and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Education and/or experience. High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) plus specialized training; and a minimum of  seven to 11 months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Language Skills. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients ,and other employees of the organization. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Communication. Internal Custodial Supervisor and school personnel in the district. External: General Public.
  • Mathematical Skills. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning ability. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10lbs, frequently lift and.or move up the 25 lbs, and occasionally lift and/or move up the 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 

 

  • Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and.or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To ensure that every custodian cleans their areas by inspecting daily.
  • Delegates work on a fair and impartial basis. Make sure each custodian is doing a good job in their area.
  • Work with teachers, principles, and custodians to complete projects.
  • Clean up after accidents or any area that needs cleaning or make sure that all areas are clean.
  • Work with the cafeteria crew daily to be sure the area is clean and ready for the next group of kids or teachers.
  • Check the restrooms after each period ends. Run hallways for trash and watch for spills. 
  • Buff tile floors, clean up biohazard spills with safety precautions, make sure you have read the SDS sheets for chemical spills.
  • Keep toilets and urinals flushed, keep floors clean, keep entry ways cleans, and turn in work orders on an as needed basis, turning in supply orders every Monday as needed.
  • Make sure that all doors are locked and lights are off. Set up tables in cafeteria daily and move furniture as needed to clean school areas.
  • Responsible for keeping equipment in good working order. Responsible for equipment valued anywhere from $3- $7 Million.
  • Report Absentees to Custodial Supervisor on a daily basis, responsible for monitoring time sheets at the end of every week and sending these to the Custodial Supervisor with all signatures and times completed.
  • Any issues regarding disciplinary action will be sent to the Custodial Supervisor for review. All leads will be included in the review process of the employee under their direct supervision.
  • Responsible for leaving information about events, and or special attention to areas in your building for the night custodians.
  • If and employee in the Custodial Department is injured on the job, they are to report this to the Custodial Supervisor and or lead and immediately call this in to our designated hotline for direct assistance, and will also need to fill our the Workers Comp “N” form for the Custodial Supervisor. These fors should be in an easily accessible location for all day employee’s and night employee’s . 
  • Attend all required meetings. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
